Stickybones Puppet Animation Mastery | Level 1: Basics. Training Plan for Serious Results
Last edited:
Introduction (Updated June 2, 2024)
Greetings to all who share my passion for stop-motion puppet animation! Today, I stand on the threshold of an important decision - I am ready to take a big step in improving my animation skills. And to ensure that this step is deliberate and effective, I have developed this training plan, inspired by the experiences of other animators who have already traversed this path or are currently doing so. My work is also based on publicly available information from behind the scenes at Aardman Academy, masterclasses by Tim Allen, and other educational events and resources.
The world of puppet animation is an exciting art form and a world full of opportunities for self-expression and creativity. Although I am not an expert in this field yet, my passion and desire for perfection will allow me to overcome any difficulties on the path to achieving my goal.
Despite my limited experience, I believe that serious results will be possible thanks to the persistent effort and detailed approach that I will put into this learning process. And I am ready to share this plan with you, hoping that it will be a source of inspiration and help for everyone who wants to improve their skills in stop-motion animation. Let's take this step together and meet on the path to achieving our goals!

Training Plan for Stickybones Animation
Level 1: Basics
101 - Character Turning Head
Objective: Develop fine motor skills and expression.Description: Animate a character slowly turning its head from side to side. Pay attention to the smoothness and naturalness of the movement.
Recommendations:
- Focus on the smoothness and sequence of head rotation.
- Ensure that the movement of the neck and head is synchronized.
- Practice small eye movements and facial expressions to add realism.
- Tip: Use looping to create continuous motion and improve animation smoothness.
102 - Hand Finger Movement
Objective: Develop control over fine finger motor skills.
Description: Animate a character's hand slowly clenching and unclenching into a fist.
Recommendations:
- Start from a natural hand position, then gradually curl and uncurl the fingers.
- Ensure smoothness and realism in the movements.
- Pay attention to how each finger moves relative to the others.
- Tip: Use looping to create continuous motion and improve animation smoothness.
103 - Character Pointing Finger
Objective: Master the coordination of hand and finger movements.
Description: Animate a character slowly raising its hand and pointing a finger in a specific direction.
Recommendations:
- Begin with a basic pose, then gradually raise the hand and extend the finger.
- Pay attention to the synchronization of hand and finger movement.
- Focus on naturalness and smoothness at each stage of the movement.
- Tip: Use looping to create continuous motion and improve animation smoothness.
104 - Character Rising on Tiptoes
Objective: Understand the basics of body control and stretching.
Description: Animate a character standing in place and slowly rising on tiptoes, then returning to the original position.
Recommendations:
- Pay attention to the smoothness and control of the movement.
- Note how the center of gravity moves up and down.
- Work on synchronizing the movements of the arms and legs to be realistic.
- Tip: Use looping to create continuous motion and improve animation smoothness.
105 - Character Rocking in Place
Objective: To learn the basics of smooth movements and kinetic energy.
Description: Animate a character standing in place and slowly rocking back and forth. Pay attention to changes in the center of gravity and inertia.
Recommendations:
- Start with a basic pose and gradually add movement forward and backward.
- Ensure that the movements are smooth and realistic.
- Work on conveying a sense of weight and slowing down when changing direction.
- Tip: Use looping to create continuous motion and improve animation smoothness.
106 - Character Jumping in Place
Objective: Master the basic principles of timing, weight, and up-and-down movement.
Description: Animate a character jumping in place. Focus on how the character squats before jumping and extends upward when propelled from the ground.
Recommendations:
- Work on the timing of the jump: pay attention to the initial phase of bending, the jump, and the landing.
- Pay attention to the center of gravity and its movement during the jump.
- Strive to create a realistic sense of weight.
- Tip: Use looping to create continuous motion and improve animation smoothness.
107 - Character Breathing
Objective: Learn to convey subtle and continuous movement through breathing.Description: Animate a character's chest and abdomen rising and falling to simulate breathing.
Recommendations:
- Pay attention to the smoothness and regularity of the breathing cycle.
- Note how the chest and shoulders move slightly during inhalation and exhalation.
- Work on making the movement subtle yet noticeable.
- Tip: Use looping to create continuous motion and improve animation smoothness.
108 - Character Returning to Previous State
Objective: Learn to loop movements and return the character to the initial position.
Description: Animate a character performing a specific movement (e.g., raising the hand or taking a step) and then returning to the initial position.
Recommendations:
- Divide the movement into key frames and work on the smoothness of transitions.
- Ensure that the character returns to the initial position exactly as it began the movement.
- Tip: Use looping to create continuous motion and improve animation smoothness.

I'm embarking on self-improvement since I don't have the opportunity to attend specialized courses. If you're ready to join, I'd gladly share my experiences and successes.
I plan to create mini-articles dedicated to each topic on the forum and more extensive ones on my Patreon. Let's learn and refine our skills in puppet stop-motion animation in the engaging Stickybones challenge.
I will update this action guide with new information, photos, and links to interesting articles as I go along.
Also, I will publish the practice animations of anyone who wants to participate in this self-study on all social media resources of our community with links to your Instagram profiles. To do this, you will need to upload your work to Instagram and mention our Stickybones community @stickybones_alive
Warm Regards, Magshifter
